Therapy can teach you problem solving skills that will stay with you for the rest of your life, well beyond the actual therapy process. When those who are under the influence are faced with problems that feel unbearable, they solve them by either doing more drugs, drinking alcohol or altogether avoiding them. Therapy teaches patient to solve issues head on,giving them practical and useful skills that apply to real life.

The first step on the road to recovery is acquiring problem solving skills id by the therapist taking note of patients symptoms, the patient needs to feel like they are being understood, this will help link specific problems to patients symptoms – the relationship between psychology and real life situations will be found. Alcohol rehab often implement this as people suffering from addiction can apply these lessons into their recovery.

The second of these steps is to choose from a list of problems which is the most important and easiest issue to solve. A patient needs to ask what the problem is and when and where does it happen, who is involved. The large problems need to be broken down into small pieces which could eventually be several. The patient at the end of these reviews the problems carefully, they should select a couple of problems to tackle, each with an achievable goal to be set.

The third step of therapy is for the patient to set one or more achievable goals, at the beginning the goals need to be set which can be achieved successfully and reliably, this will instill a feeling of confidence inside the patient, giving them the strength to go on.

The fortune is for the therapist to ask to patient to brainstorm as many solutions as possible to the problems which have been chosen.

The fifth step is for the patient to make a list of pros and cons for each and every solution and to pick the solution which is both achievable and with few disadvantages.

Step number 6 is broken down into simple substeps and when they should be all carried out. The final step is for the patient to evaluate their progress by looking at the original problems, their progress and being prepared to add new problems to the list.

It may take a little while to get closer to the long term goal but the main point is to learn how to problem solve constructively  with the help and support of loved ones and support networks – and without the use of abusive substances. If you feel like you need help, refer to drug rehab.
